Solitaire History in Australia

Card games arrived in Australia with the First Fleet in 1788, and Patience quickly became a favourite way to pass time in the vast Australian outback. Station hands, miners, and settlers all found solace in this single-player card game during the long, quiet evenings. Today, that tradition continues with millions of Australians enjoying digital Solitaire on their devices.

The name "Patience" reflects the game's origins - it was called this in Britain and Australia because of the patience required to play it well. Americans later coined the term "Solitaire," which has since become popular worldwide.

Game Modes: Turn 1 vs Turn 3

Our free online Solitaire offers both classic Klondike variations. Use the toggle switch above the game board to switch between modes whenever you like.

Turn 1 Mode (Easy)

Turn over one card at a time from the stock pile. This mode is more forgiving and perfect for casual play during your lunch break. Great for beginners or when you just want a relaxing game without too much pressure.

Turn 3 Mode (Classic Challenge)

The traditional way to play Klondike Solitaire. Draw three cards at a time but can only play the top card. This requires more strategy and forward planning - perfect for experienced players who want a proper challenge.

How to Play Solitaire

Setting Up

The game uses a standard 52-card deck arranged in seven columns called the tableau. The first column has one card, the second has two, and so on up to seven cards in the last column. Only the top card of each column is face-up. The remaining cards form the stock pile.

Moving Cards

Build tableau columns in descending order with alternating colours (red-black-red-black). For example, place a black 8 on a red 9. Only Kings can be placed in empty columns. Build foundation piles by suit from Ace to King.
