How to Play Mahjong Solitaire (Rules)

Objective

The goal is to remove all 144 tiles from the board by matching them in pairs. Find two identical tiles that are both "free" and click them to remove the pair. Clear the entire board to win!

What Makes a Tile "Free"?

A tile is considered free (and can be selected) when it meets both conditions:

  • Not Covered: No other tile is stacked on top of it.
  • Side Exposed: At least one side (left or right) is open, not blocked by adjacent tiles.

Free tiles are highlighted and clickable. Blocked tiles appear slightly dimmed and cannot be selected until they become free.

Tile Matching Rules

  • Identical Tiles: Most tiles must match exactly (same suit and number/symbol).
  • Seasons: All four Season tiles (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter) match each other.
  • Flowers: All four Flower tiles (Plum, Orchid, Chrysanthemum, Bamboo) match each other.

Tile Types

The game uses 144 tiles divided into these categories:

  • Bamboo (1-9): 4 copies each = 36 tiles
  • Circles (1-9): 4 copies each = 36 tiles
  • Characters (1-9): 4 copies each = 36 tiles
  • Winds: East, South, West, North (4 copies each) = 16 tiles
  • Dragons: Red, Green, White (4 copies each) = 12 tiles
  • Seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter (1 copy each) = 4 tiles
  • Flowers: Plum, Orchid, Chrysanthemum, Bamboo (1 copy each) = 4 tiles

Strategy Tips to Win

  • Plan Ahead: Before making a match, consider what tiles it will free up. Prioritise matches that expose the most hidden tiles.
  • Focus on Top Layers: Tiles on higher layers block more tiles below. Clear them first when possible.
  • Match Identical Tiles Wisely: If you see three or four identical tiles, think about which two to match. The wrong choice might trap the remaining tiles.
  • Use Hints Sparingly: The hint feature shows available matches, but try to find them yourself first for a better challenge.
  • Watch the Edges: Tiles on the far left and right edges are often easier to free since they only need one side exposed.
