Why Canadians Love Solitaire

Solitaire has a special place in Canadian hearts. The game's namesake, "Klondike," actually comes from the famous Klondike Gold Rush in Yukon, Canada! During the 1890s gold rush, prospectors played card games to pass time during long, dark northern winters - and Klondike Solitaire became one of the most popular.

  • Perfect for those long Canadian winters
  • Great way to unwind during your Tim Hortons break
  • Works on any device - phone, tablet, or computer
  • Free entertainment for the whole family
  • Exercise your mind coast to coast

The Canadian Klondike Connection

The name "Klondike Solitaire" is a proud Canadian heritage! Named after the Klondike region of Yukon, this version of Solitaire gained massive popularity during the 1896-1899 Gold Rush. Miners and prospectors needed entertainment during the brutal winters, and single-player card games were perfect.

Today, Klondike remains the most popular form of Solitaire worldwide, and millions of Canadians play it daily. From Vancouver to Halifax, from Yellowknife to Windsor, this truly Canadian game continues to bring joy to players of all ages.

Game Modes: Turn 1 vs Turn 3

Our free online Solitaire offers both classic Klondike variations. Use the toggle switch above the game board to switch between modes whenever you like.

Turn 1 Mode (Casual Play)

Turn over one card at a time from the stock pile. This mode is more relaxed with a higher win rate - perfect for a quick game during your coffee break or while waiting for the game to start on Hockey Night in Canada.

Turn 3 Mode (Classic Challenge)

The traditional Klondike experience. Draw three cards at a time but can only play the top card. This requires more strategy and planning - like a good game of chess or planning your route through a Canadian snowstorm!

The Setup

The game uses a standard 52-card deck dealt into seven columns called the tableau. The first column has one card, the second has two, and so on up to seven cards in the last column. Only the top card of each column is face-up. The remaining cards form the stock pile.
