What is Mahjong Solitaire?

Mahjong Solitaire uses mahjong tiles arranged in overlapping layers. It is different from the traditional multiplayer game: rather than forming a hand, you find matching free tiles and remove them in pairs.

Mahjong Solitaire rules

Objective

Remove all 144 tiles in pairs. The game is won when the board is empty.

When is a tile free?

A tile can be selected only when both conditions are true:

  • Uncovered: no other tile lies on top of it.
  • Open on one side: either its left or right side is not blocked.

Which tiles match?

  • Most pairs must have the same symbol and number.
  • Any two Season tiles form a pair.
  • Any two Flower tiles form a pair.

Tile set

  • Bamboo, Circles and Characters: four copies of each value from 1 to 9
  • Winds: East, South, West and North, four copies each
  • Dragons: Red, Green and White, four copies each
  • Seasons and Flowers: four unique tiles in each group

Strategy tips

  • Look beyond the immediate pair: prefer moves that expose upper layers or open long rows.
  • Balance the two sides: avoid leaving a long edge blocked at one end.
  • Choose identical pairs carefully: when three or four copies are available, one pairing may release more tiles.
  • Use hints as a check: a hint shows an available pair, not necessarily the strongest strategic choice.
