Canfield Solitaire Online

Canfield starts with a 13-card reserve, four single-card tableau columns, and one foundation starter. That starter sets the base rank for all four foundations. The remaining 34 cards form the draw-three stock, which can be recycled without a fixed limit.

Canfield rules: a reserve, a base rank, and wrapping

  • Foundations: start each suit at the deal's base rank, then build up in suit, wrapping from King to Ace until all thirteen ranks are present.
  • Tableau: build down in alternating colors, with Ace-to-King wrapping. Ordered face-up packets can move together.
  • Reserve: only its exposed top card is available. Empty tableau columns refill automatically from this reserve while cards remain there.
  • After the reserve empties: any available card or legal packet can enter an empty tableau column.
  • Stock: turn up to three cards per draw. Only the top waste card is playable; removing it exposes the previous card. Click the empty stock to recycle the waste and draw again.

Work through the foundation, reserve, and draw-three rules

These simplified positions illustrate decisions in this game; they are not your current deal.

1. A foundation can start at 7 and finish at 6

If the starter is the 7 of Hearts, add the 8 of Hearts to that foundation. Start another foundation with the 7 of Clubs, not the Ace of Clubs. Each suit follows 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King, Ace, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.

Wrapping also applies in the opposite direction in the tableau: a black Ace accepts a red King, and that King can carry an ordered alternating packet below it. A black King would not fit the black Ace.

2. A foundation move can also refill a column

The Heart foundation starts at 7, one tableau column contains only the 8 of Hearts, and the reserve ends in a Queen of Clubs. Move the 8 onto the foundation. The empty tableau column immediately receives that Queen from the reserve; you do not choose a separate refill move.

The reserve count drops by one, and its next card turns face up. You cannot insert a waste card into the brief gap before the automatic refill. After the reserve is exhausted, that restriction disappears and a cleared column can accept any available card or legal packet.

3. Play all three waste cards before drawing again

Suppose a stock draw puts a 5 of Spades, 6 of Hearts, and 7 of Clubs into the waste in that order, so only the 7 is currently exposed. A tableau column ends in an 8 of Hearts.

  1. Move the 7 of Clubs onto the 8 of Hearts. The 6 of Hearts becomes the waste top.
  2. Move the 6 of Hearts onto that 7 of Clubs. The 5 of Spades is exposed next.
  3. Move the 5 onto the 6. You used all three cards in an alternating-color sequence.

Draw three controls how cards enter the waste, not how many must stay there. You may play through the packet one exposed card at a time. A draw at the end of the stock can contain fewer than three cards.

Use tableau moves to release the reserve

Watch the reserve count beside its pile. Clearing a tableau column while the reserve still contains cards immediately brings its top card into that space. You cannot reserve the gap for a different card first.

Look for ways to play the reserve top directly to a foundation or tableau column. Each successful move exposes the next reserve card. When the reserve is finally empty, a cleared tableau column becomes flexible storage rather than an automatic refill.

Common questions

Why does an Ace not start an empty foundation?

An empty foundation needs the base rank shown by its marker. Aces start the foundations only in deals whose starter is an Ace. In the 7 example, an Ace is added after a King, partway through the cycle.

Does wrapping apply to both the tableau and foundations?

Yes, in opposite directions. Foundations go upward in the same suit, so King is followed by Ace. The tableau goes downward in alternating colors, so a black Ace can receive a red King.

Does recycling the stock also restore reserve cards?

No. Only cards currently left in the waste are recycled into the stock. Cards in the reserve, tableau, or foundations stay where they are. The reserve is reduced by playing its top card or by an automatic refill.

Watch both the waste and reserve counters

The two piles serve different jobs. Clicking the stock draws up to three cards, while the reserve supplies one exposed card at a time and refills empty columns. Undo reverses an action together with any automatic refill it caused, which helps you compare the resulting reserve access.

  • Click or tap a card, then its destination. For a packet, select the first card you want to carry. Select it again to cancel. The message below the board explains the current selection or move.
  • Undo reverses your last action. Hint highlights a legal action and describes it below the board; it does not calculate a complete winning route.
  • New starts a fresh shuffle. Daily starts this game's dated challenge. Both replace the current board.
  • Full Screen gives the board more room. On a narrow screen, scroll sideways inside the board to reach all its piles.

Compare Klondike's Ace-to-King foundations with Canfield's changing base rank. For another game with unusual foundations, try Crescent, which starts some piles at Aces and others at Kings. Yukon removes stock management entirely.
