How to Play Spider Solitaire (Step by Step)

Objective

The goal is to build and remove eight same-suit sequences from King down to Ace. Each completed in-suit run automatically moves to the foundations (or is removed from the tableau), freeing space to continue organizing remaining cards.

Components

  • 104 cards: two standard 52-card decks
  • Tableau: 10 columns where you build descending piles
  • Stock: the undealt cards used to deal new rows
  • Foundations: completed in-suit sequences (K → A), eight total to win

Initial Setup and Deal

  • Ten tableau columns are dealt. The first four columns receive six cards each.
  • The remaining six columns receive five cards each.
  • Only the top card of each column is face up; all others are face down.
  • The rest of the cards form the stock (face down), to be dealt later.

Building Rules (Tableau)

  • You may build cards in descending rank regardless of suit (e.g., 9♣ on 10♥).
  • You may move a group of cards together only if they form a same-suit, perfectly descending sequence (e.g., 10♠, 9♠, 8♠, 7♠).
  • If a pile contains mixed suits, you can only move the largest in-suit block at the bottom.
  • Empty columns can be filled by any single card or by a same-suit descending sequence.
  • When you uncover a face-down card, it turns face up automatically.

Dealing from the Stock

  • When you need new cards, deal one card to each tableau column from the stock.
  • All columns must contain at least one card before you deal. If a column is empty, place any card or same-suit sequence there first.
  • Newly dealt cards are placed face up on top of each column.

Completing Sequences and Foundations

  • When a column contains a full same-suit King-to-Ace sequence, it is automatically removed to the foundations.
  • Removing a sequence frees space and helps you reveal face-down cards.
  • Clear all eight sequences to win the Spider Solitaire game.
